Developer completes restoration of listed Georgian terrace

Developer Elliot Group has completed the refurbishment of a listed Georgian terrace in Liverpool’s Canning neighbourhood following a blueprint agreed with Liverpool City Council.

The nine properties, which form an L-shape along Percy Street and Upper Parliament Street, had remained empty since 2008 when they were last occupied as bedsits.

After an open-market bidding process they were sold by Liverpool City Council to Elliot Group in 2016 with a stipulation that as many as possible were returned to single family homes.

The Liverpool-based developer has since invested £3.2m on their restoration and, says boss Elliot Lawless, it has been worth the wait.

“They’re beautiful homes, with well-proportioned spaces and high ceilings. Percy Street is a real gem within the conservation area and it’s a pleasure to bring them back to life.”

Lawless said that the homes fronting Upper Parliament Street have been converted into spacious apartments for rent, with the properties on the quieter Percy Street to be sold as single homes.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “When we sold the properties we were keen not just to see their restoration for its own sake, but to bring more families back into the city centre. There are very good schools in the neighbourhood and they, of course, add to its appeal.

“I’ve inspected the properties myself and they are lovely. It was good to hear so many local accents on site, too. I’ll look forward to seeing new residents moving in shortly.”

Lawless began his development career refurbishing grand Georgian houses in the Canning area and says the job was “like getting back to my roots.”

City Residential has been appointed as sales agent for the homes, with prices to be revealed shortly. Liverpool-based Falconer Chester Hall were the architects, with local contractor Newry Construction tasked with the refurbishment.
