Typhoo Tea has announced it is to cut just under 80 jobs at a factory in Merseyside as part of a major restructuring.

The news comes just a few days after emerged PG Tips Unilever is looking to axe jobs due to falling demand for tea among younger people.

Today Typhoo has announced plans to restructure its business in a move to safeguard the future of the firm.

The restructure, which is subject to the outcome of a consultation process, is expected to result in the loss of 55 full-time jobs and 21 temporary roles from the company’s 295 strong workforce at its site in Moreton, Wirral.

The announcement follows a detailed review of all aspects of the business against the backdrop of an increasingly challenging trading environment.

Chief Executive Des Kingsley said the organisational restructure was an integral part of a broader plan to secure a viable future for the company.

Departments most likely to be affected by the announcement include production, engineering and office-based functions.

Mr Kingsley said: “This decision has not been taken lightly. We recognise the impact of today’s announcement, but we have to take action if we are to remain competitive and build a strong and successful future for the business, in which there will be a renewed focus on efficiency, cost management, quality and service levels.

“We will offer every possible assistance to all those people whose roles will be affected and will work closely with relevant support agencies in the area to try and find alternative employment opportunities.”

Alongside the organisational restructure, the company is proposing to introduce a new, double day factory shift pattern, moving from three shifts to two, more rigorous buying procedures and a drive to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency in all key areas of the business.

Mr Kingsley said: “We have to implement such a robust programme if we are to achieve the required changes. If we do, I’m hopeful that we can secure a positive future for Typhoo, one of Britain’s best-loved brands, and our other hot beverages, and for everyone who remains associated with them.

As the company is now engaged in a 30-day period of consultation with employees’ representatives, it is not in a position to make any further comment at this point.
