New affordable homes approved in Farnworth

The development site

Bolton at Home has been granted planning approval for 60 new homes in Farnworth as part of its drive to significantly increase the number of affordable homes for people in the borough.

Together with development and construction partner, Watson Homes, Bolton at Home will build 48 apartments and 12 houses on a site in Campbell Street.

The homes, which will regenerate a derelict and overgrown site, will be made available for affordable rent. Affordable rent levels are set at least 20% lower than the average private rent available in the local area.

Work on the homes is expected to begin this Spring and complete in Autumn 2021.

Paul Philbin, head of development and home ownership for Bolton at Home, said: “Bolton, like other places, has a shortage of good quality affordable homes and many people are living at risk of homelessness.

“We’re working hard with our development partners to give more people a better opportunity to live in a safe, secure and energy-efficient home at a comparably low rent level.

“We’ll continue to seek opportunities, funding and approval to provide the types and numbers of properties in places where they’re needed to give local people housing options and help keep them connected with their families and communities.”

Rob Watson, director at Watson Homes, said: “This project will see the delivery of high-quality, affordable homes for the Bolton community. At Watson, we’re glad to continue supporting the excellent work Bolton at Home does for local people.

“The key to this development will be ensuring residents are given a quality standard of housing, as well as a sense of community and space that will hopefully impact their day-to-day lives. We’re excited to get started.”

The development will see two three-storey apartment blocks built close to the two-acre site’s boundary with Campbell Street. These will provide 24 one-bedroom apartments and 24 two-bedroom apartments.

The 12 houses, arranged in three terraces, will be built to the rear of the site and comprise six three-bedroom and six two-bedroom properties. All the houses will have off-street parking and private rear gardens.

The site, which will be accessed from Campbell Street, includes dedicated car parking provision for the apartments, secure cycle storage, and communal amenity areas. Landscaping and tree and shrub planting will also take place on the site.
