Green wall installation aims to cut carbon footprint and improve wellbeing

The proposed scheme

Derwent Lodge Estates has announced a giant green wall scheme to be installed on the front and side elevations of Castle Hey in Liverpool city centre.

The building is a mixed-use building containing apartments on the upper levels and the Beatles-themed Abbey Road Kitchen and Bar at ground level.

Ed Irving, assistant building surveyor with Derwent Lodge Estates, said: “We’ve been looking at ways to improve Harrington Street for some time.

“We see it as a key gateway from the restaurants of Castle Street to the Cavern Quarter, but it is not being utilised to its full potential at the moment.

“We want to change that.”

He added: “Scientific research has shown that green space and planting has a huge beneficial impact on wellbeing, along with reducing carbon footprint and increasing biodiversity and we’re excited to be able to bring these improvements to Harrington Street.

“We are also hoping that the green wall will become a tourist attraction in its own right, which will provide a much-needed boost to the many independent businesses nearby.”

The 150 sq m green wall has been designed by contractor ‘I Want Plants’, along with assistance from structural engineers Sutcliffe and architects Condy Lofthouse.

Derwent Lodge Estates is funding the project itself without access to public funding or grants.

Planning permission has recently been granted with the application receiving strong support from Liverpool Central ward councillor Nick Small.

The plants are currently being grown in a nursery and installation is planned for July/August 2020.

Features and benefits of the green wall include:

  • Reducing carbon footprint through absorption of carbon and other harmful pollutants
  • Enhancing biodiversity by providing habitat for insects and birds
  • Improving mental health and wellbeing of residents and visitors
