Redundancies made as contractor collapses into administration

Redundancies have been made at a civil engineering contractor after it collapsed into administration.

Middleton-based Bemus Construction Services worked with housebuilders and had been badly hit by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In late February, director Sean Walsh described the new housebuilding market as “very healthy” and highlighted Bemus’s “strong forward order book, with some contracts ongoing into 2021/22”.

The company’s most recent accounts, for the year to March 2019, showed revenues had increased 11% to £38.6m.

However pre-tax profits were down 27% to £424,000, and were a long way below the £1.28m generated in 2016.

The company was created in 2011 by Sean Walsh, a former director at Jon Ennis Construction.

It provided civil engineering and groundworks packages and had developed a utilities division which designed and installed infrastructure on new build sites.

The general scope of its service included earthworks, remediation, demolition, foundations, reinforced concrete, highways, drainage, hard landscape works and multi-utility installations, such as design & install utility infrastructure on new build sites, both domestic and commercial.

It had employed around 100 people, but employees had confirmed redundancies have been made at the business.

It is understood the firm was badly impacted by the coronavirus-related construction shutdown.

Bemus has been contacted for comment.
