Northern Asian Powerlist 2020 winners – Sonya Bachra-Byrne

Sonya Bachra-Byrne, co-founder and creative director of AVIE, won the Emerging Entrepreneur category of the inaugural Northern Asian Powerlist 2020.

The full list of winners, along with all those shortlisted, was announced on Friday 2 October.

Outlining why they had chosen Bachra-Byrne, the judges’ report explained: “Sonya has a great story and business, which is a real advocate for Yorkshire.

“We were particularly impressed that the debut collection was selected as Drapers “Brand to Watch for 2019”, and later that year was nominated and won the category for “Best Emerging Brand of the Year 2019” by Drapers.

“We were even more so impressed that the business has refocused on a bespoke service in light of the changes faced by retailers amidst COVID-19.”

Bachra-Byrne responded: “I am humbled and shocked to receive such a prestigious award as Emerging Entrepreneur of 2020!

“It is wonderful to receive such an acknowledgement, especially during these unprecedented times that we are all navigating.

“I am honoured to be part of the Northern Asian Powerlist. A huge thank you to the Northern Powerhouse community and the supporting partners that have made this happen.”

Shortlisted for the Emerging Entrepreneur category were:

North East – Nazia Aftab, managing director, NPA Human Resources Consultancy.

Yorkshire and the Humber – Omar Bahadur, chief executive and co-founder, Faraday drinks.
