Views sought on 174-home Old Trafford scheme as part of redevelopment plans

Bold Street proposals

Residents are being invited to give their views on plans for a new housing development on land off Bold Street in Old Trafford at a virtual public consultation.

A joint venture between Trafford Housing Trust and Trafford Council will be formed to deliver the scheme, which is proposing 174 homes be built at the ‘Tamworth’ site, formerly home to three high rise tower blocks and the Seahawk Pub.

The development intends to deliver one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes for a mix of tenures including market sale, shared ownership and social rent.

The homes and their construction will be sustainable and meet high energy efficiency standards, and will be enhanced by proposals for a public square with high quality public realm, which could include a café and community space.

As a result of the pandemic the public consultation will take place virtually online, and residents are being encouraged to email any questions they have to Trafford Housing Trust before the plans are finalised and submitted for planning permission later this year. The consultation will run for three weeks from March 4 until March 25.

Graeme Scott, executive director-development at Trafford Housing Trust, said: “We will be submitting a joint planning application with the council in the summer, so this is a great opportunity for people to see and comment on our plans. If we get planning permission we intend to be on site in early 2022.”

He added: “Our proposals are in line with the principles established through the Old Trafford Masterplan, and promise to create a vibrant, sustainable community with quality housing.

“Greater Manchester and the North West have a real need for affordable housing, and this development is another good example of what we are doing to help tackle the current housing crisis.”

Cllr James Wright, Trafford Council’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “Trafford Council is totally committed to providing more social housing across the borough and the proposed Tamworth development is testament to that.

“There is also a huge green and sustainable element to the plans which is another development priority for the council.

“This is an impressive redevelopment plan and I would encourage as many people as possible to give their views on the scheme as part of the consultation.”
