Ex-BVCA boss to lead IoD

THE Institute of Directors has named Simon Walker as its new director general.

Mr Walker, a former chief executive of the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, takes over the role from Miles Templeman next month.

In addition to his business background with companies such as Reuters and British Airways, his previous roles include being the Queen’s communications secretary and special adviser to John Major during his time as Prime Minister.

Mr Walker said: “As director general, I will be campaigning for growth and the competitiveness of British business. We’ve taken the UK’s competitiveness for granted for too long and now find ourselves with an excessively high tax burden, an overregulated labour market and creaking transport and energy infrastructures.

“Only the most competitive countries can thrive in today’s global economy. Britain has lost its competitive edge and radical reform is the only route to sustainable growth, stability and long-term job and wealth creation.

“I strongly support the Government’s spending review and the need to reduce the deficit. But at the same time there are many potential reforms on the supply-side of the economy which would significantly improve future growth.

“The Institute of Directors will publish its own growth plan in October and from day one I will campaign to see it implemented in full.”

The appointment was welcomed by Darrell Matthews, the IoD’s North West regional director, who said: “Simon’s experience in senior roles at the top of both public and private companies make him an ideal candidate to lead the IoD into a new era. He has already stressed the need to boost Britain’s competitiveness and help businesses kick-start the economy.

“I am also pleased that Ann Jordan, a former chair of our region, continues to serve on the IoD board, ensuring that the North West has a passionate and influential voice in London.

“Finally, I would like to wish Miles all the best for the future. He has served the IoD brilliantly. He has also been a great supporter of the North West during his term, visiting the region often.”
