Port bosses and Unite the Union announce agreement to end industrial action

The Port of Liverpool said it has reached a deal with trade union Unite which should lead to the end of strikes at the container port.

Around 600 dock workers have been involved in a series of stoppages at the Seaforth container base since the start of September.

The action, which has severely impacted trade at the port, was over the employer’s wage offer first, but then escalated last month after news that the company would be making 132 redundancies among the workforce.

Unite members have just finished a third strike period which lasted two weeks.

However, Peel Ports Group, which operates the Port of Liverpool’s container terminals alongside TIL (Terminal Investments Limited), announced this afternoon (November 8) that an agreed proposal has been reached with Unite the Union that it says will be fully recommended to its members.

Unite will now organise a vote with the container operators later this week to formally accept the offer.

On this basis, Peel Ports’ chief operating officer, David Huck and Unite the Union’s national officer for transport, Bobby Morton, confirmed that the strike planned for November 14, will be postponed.
