Construction of 104 homes starts on former aerodrome site

CGI of Anchor scheme in Woodford

Construction work has started on 104 new homes aimed at the elderly on a former aerodrome in Stockport.

Anchor, a developer of specialist housing and care for people in later life, is now on site at its Woodford development on Vernon Roe Avenue.

The new development will see a collection of 87 one- and two-bedroom high quality apartments and 17 two-bedroom bungalows. Sixty-six will be classed as affordable housing, with 33 of these being rented and 33 being shared ownership.

Anchor acquired the land, which was once part of the former Woodford aerodrome site, in 2022, with planning approval granted in April 2022.

The site is located about five miles to the south of Stockport in the village of Woodford and forms part of the former aerodrome site covering around 500 acres of brownfield land being developed by Harrow Estates/Redrow.

The site is easily accessed off a new estate road which provides vehicular and pedestrian access to the site.

The development will include communal facilities such as a resident lounge, communal gardens, a bistro and guest suite as well as Anchor’s Be Well 360 programme. Anchor will also provide a 24-hour response call system and a local manager will be on hand to provide help and support.

Lisa Walters, head of commissioning at Anchor, said: “With such high demand for homes for those in later life this development is a fantastic opportunity for us to provide a new community for local residents, as well as those looking to move to Woodford, where they can discover a wider range of lifestyle options.

“The start of construction at this exciting new development is a key step in helping Anchor to achieve its vision of creating 5,700 new homes over the next 10 years, and we are looking forward to expanding in this new location.”

The development will include 55 car parking spaces with dedicated disabled parking and electric car charging points. There are also 20 cycle spaces in the car park area. The main building and bungalows have solar roof panels and LED lighting throughout the building.
