Tributes paid to Gregg Davison

Gregg Davison

Law firm Pinsents have led the tributes to private equity lawyer Gregg Davison who has passed away after a long illness.

In a statement the firm said: “It is with great sadness that we share that our friend and colleague, Gregg Davison, has passed away.

“Gregg was a phenomenally bright and energetic partner who always brought a beaming smile and great humour to the workplace. He was a top Private Equity lawyer and an influential figure in the North West business community.

“He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, and our thoughts are with his wife, son and the rest of his family.”

A reflection of the love and esteem so many had for him is included on the LinkedIn post the firm have shared.

Gary Tipper, founder of Palatine Private Equity said: “Quite simply Gregg was a great guy both professionally and personally and I for one will miss him greatly. He handled his illness with amazing resilience and even in the last few years and months we had some great laughs. Just glad his suffering is over and he can rest in peace.”

Paul Jefferson, office managing director of rival firm Gateley, and a fellow private equity lawyer, said: “Such sad news, so sorry to hear it. As all have already said, a great adversary and yet managed to do it with humanity and humour and make the whole thing much more fun that it otherwise would have been…will be sorely missed.”

Debra Cooper, former colleague and now a banking lawyer at Hill Dickinson, said:  “Gregg was a force of nature. He taught me the skill of hustling for a daylight completion and cutting through any BS. Sending condolences to all of Gregg’s family and friends.”

Chris Barry, former editor of TheBusinessDesk.com North West, said: “Gregg was a first class private equity lawyer and a great personality in the Manchester corporate finance community. He understood that relationships in business really matter and always made time to help if he could with any story I was chasing and was a passionate standard bearer for Manchester’s legal and corporate finance capabilities.”

Mark Keeley, partner at ECI, said: “A big loss to everyone lucky enough to have known him. Gregg was always great company and a genuinely all round good guy. Despite his huge success he remained humble and I will always remember how he respected everyone irrespective of their age, experience or position. My “Intro to PE legals” session with him will always stick with me, as will his guidance on my first PE deal. I will miss the football banter but am sure that he will continue to delight in the domination of his beloved “City”. Thoughts and condolences go out to Kate, Will and his family.”

Helen Ridge, former managing partner of Pinsents: “As others have said Gregg was ultra bright and extremely commercial and by far the best rainmaker I have ever seen at work. He was a leader in the NW deals market as well as a hugely charismatic personality in the office and a fabulous mentor to many in the team. He was an inspirational team leader and such a big character he will be missed by so many. He also had the best sense of humour and played some great pranks in the office!”

A lifelong Manchester City supporter, friends of Gregg took a flag in his memory to the European Champions League Final in Istanbul bearing the song title: ‘There is a Light that Never Goes Out”
