Waste solutions developer calls in administrators

Administrators have been appointed by a waste and energy solutions firm, headquartered in Stoke-on-Trent, but with operations in Chester and Wirral.

Cogen, an end-to-end developer of technically advanced energy recovery facilities, employs around 55 staff across its Stoke, London and Bristol offices.

It has developed five gasification facilities in the UK in Tyseley, Northamptonshire, Chester, Plymouth and the Wirral.

They are regulated by the Environmental Agency and each receives between 30,000 and 300,000 tonnes of waste per year.

According to Cogen’s website, the sites represent £250m of investment and have a gross capacity of more than 50MWe.

Each site looks to divert waste from landfills, therefore reducing the amount of waste exported and transforming residual waste into low-carbon, renewable energy.

Development partners across the facilities include Peel Environment, Aviva Investors, Nexterra and Ashfords.

The Tyseley facility is located on the site of one of the oldest companies in Birmingham – Webster and Horsfall.

It’s now owned by Gravis Capital Management to whom Cogen provided management services until late 2021.
