Aldi invests £7.5m in acquiring site for new Cheshire store

CGI of proposed scheme

Supermarket chain, Aldi, is opening a new 20,000 sq ft store at Viking Park, Congleton, after acquiring the site from Clowes Developments (North West).

The two-acre fully serviced plot located in the retail zone of the mixed-use development will facilitate a single storey purpose-built food retail facility.

The exterior of the building has been designed to sympathetically reflect its green surroundings, a design code condition which has been applied across the scheme. With the plot handed over by ground works specialists J C Balls and Sons, Aldi’s construction teams are now ready to begin the build process.

Bryn Richards, Aldi Real Estate Director, said: “After working closely with Clowes Developments we’re excited to be completing the purchase of land at Viking Way, so that we can start to deliver on our £7.5m investment into Congleton.

“Our public consultation saw more than 450 people pledge support for the new store, something the Planning Committee recognised when they unanimously approved our application in September 2023.

“People were especially supportive of the bespoke design and landscaping planned for the store, which will ensure that it complements its setting within the town. We’re now looking forward to starting on site and commencing construction and hope to open our doors to the public in autumn 2024.”

Marc Freeman, Director, Clowes Developments (UK), said: “The construction of this plot will bring the retail element of this development to life as well as bringing significant investment and a wealth of job opportunities to Congleton.

“Our groundwork teams have now completed the enabling works across the site and we have started the Section 278 highways works with a 14 week programme to complete.”

Elsewhere on the mixed-use scheme, residential developer, Bloor Homes, is due to open its show home by the end of March and is progressing with the construction of its first phase of housing.

On completion, Viking Park will deliver up to 175 homes, a 20,500 sq ft supermarket, as well as 36,800 sq ft of office facilities and 219,500 sq ft of industrial units.
