New apartments set to spring up on former Irish Club car park in £7.5m scheme

CGI of proposed scheme

A shared ownership residential scheme will transform Chorlton Irish Club car park into 29 new apartments in a £7.5m development.

J Greenwood Builders and Southway Housing Trust have embarked on the four-storey project which will provide 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments, plus one studio flat.

Electric car charging points and measures including energy-efficient heating and hot water systems will help reduce utility costs for the apartments and enhance the sustainability of this exciting development.

Design and construction will be carried out by J Greenwood Builders for Southway Housing. The scheme is receiving funding from Homes England through the Affordable Homes programme and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) Brownfield Housing Fund under the Government’s Levelling Up programme.

Once completed, the homes will be available through Southway’s sales division Gecko, which specialises in the sale and marketing of high quality, affordable homes throughout Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Adrian Rooney, managing director at Manchester-based J. Greenwood Builders, said “We’re starting work on another fantastic project with Southway Housing. With our designers and supply chain we are looking forward to seeing this project help enhance this vibrant part of Chorlton.”

Karen Mitchell, Southway Housing Trust chief executive, said: “We’re working with all our partners to meet the challenge of providing high quality, sustainable and affordable homes for people in housing need and this project shows our continued commitment to that goal.”

Cllr Ged Cooney, GMCA Portfolio Lead for Housing, said: “Through the Brownfield Housing Fund we are continuing to unlock sites across Greater Manchester. It’s great to see work begin on another project that will deliver much needed homes in an area where there is high demand.”

J Greenwood Builders is also delivering 24 new one- and two-bedroom apartments for Southway Housing at Francis Road, Withington, Manchester.
