Special school agrees lease at historic Chester location destined for huge refurb

The Friars

The Abbey School, a Chester organisation which caters for young people with autism,  has agreed a lease at The Friars, located on White Friars within the City Walls.

Commercial property agents, Legat Owen, agreed the lease on behalf of a private client.

The Abbey School, based in Chester’s historic Abbey Square, opened in 2020 and helps people with autism who may have additional learning difficulties and behaviours that challenge.

The School will be undertaking a huge refurbishment of The Friars property.

In total the premises comprises 7,924 sq ft. The main building is a substantial Grade II-listed property, surrounded by an extensive walled garden which is mainly lawn with numerous mature trees. Also included is a former coach house/stables.

The site has a long and rich history formerly having been occupied by the Carmelite Friary of the White Friars of Chester, established circa 1290.

From 1667, the site was occupied by Sir John Vanbrugh, best known as the designer of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard.

The current building was built in 1742. Since 1792 the property has been occupied by a firm of solicitors.

Barnabas Borbely, founder and CEO of Abbey School, said: “Abbey School is thrilled to acquire such a great historic building in Chester city centre.

“The Friars is a beautiful addition to our growing property portfolio of prestigious buildings and once fully renovated it will live up to our school’s ethos and values – offering the best possible learning environment for our pupils in order to unlock their full potential.”

Tom Creer, of Legat Owen, said: “The building is such a proud part of Chester’s history.”
