Blow for Stockport as iconic fashion store closes

Stockport’s buzzing reputation suffered an unwelcome piece of bad news in the run up to Christmas with the shock news that Old Town General Store had suddenly closed.
Owner Tony Murray said in a short statement: “It’s with great sadness that the store is now closed. In the current climate we can’t continue any longer.
“It’s all been very sudden so we are working our way through suppliers, customers etc when we have more news.
“For anybody that has shown support since October 2020, I thank you. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

The store stocked brands such as Armor Lux, Universal Works and Penfield and had recently celebrated its fourth birthday. The business had relocated from its original store on the Underbanks to a new unit closer to the Merseyway precinct, but still within Stockport’s Old Town and was still an active part of the town’s recent events.
The shop counted amongst its loyal costumers the BBC DJ and journalist Nihal Arthanayake who said on Instagram: “This has made me sad and angry.”
He added: “This shop was the best menswear store in Greater Manchester by a long way. I wish the government had produced a budget that could have given some relief to small retailers who had battled through COVID and then the cost of living crisis. But they didn’t. Quite the opposite.”
Murray has been an active advocate for the rise of Stockport, hosting events and serving on the board of Totally Stockport, the town’s Business Improvement District.
Just two months ago the business was named as one of the best independent boutiques in the country, with website Creative Boom describing how “this Stockport gem has evolved into a 2,000-square-foot treasure trove of carefully chosen brands.”
The closure of Old Town General Store comes at what has otherwise been a “standout year” for Stockport. In an end of year message the council say it has cemented its place as “one of the UK’s most exciting and forward-thinking” towns.
“From being named The Best Place to Live in the North West by The Sunday Times to major milestones like the opening of Stockport Interchange and Viaduct Park, the borough has continued to thrive. Cultural highlights, such as holding the title of Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture, have further showcased Stockport’s vibrant transformation.
“This year’s achievements reflect the borough’s bold vision and commitment to creating a place where people, communities, and businesses can flourish. As we move into 2025, with even more exciting developments ahead, Stockport’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down.”
