TESCO is to close a Greater Manchester distribution centre, a move that will affect 620 workers.

The company is moving the operation to Widnes in July and has offered staff jobs at the new site or elsewhere in the group.

Drivers are being transferred to Eddie Stobart which is taking over from logistics group Wincanton next month.

Tesco said it had taken the decision because the distribution centre, in Middleton, was now too small to serve its stores.

A spokesperson said: “The site at Middleton is 20 years old now and provides no room for expansion.”
