Soccerex scores global interest

SOCCEREX, the football business event which opens in Manchester today, has attracted industry professionals from around the world.

The two-day convention and exhibition – the first European event – on the organisation’s calendar has struck a cord with the industry, marketing director David Wright told TheBusinessDesk.com.

“In terms of timing, we couldn’t have been better. The unfortunate situation at Portsmouth, the debate over ownership at Manchester United, and of course the England World Cup bid gearing up for the final submission.”

More than 1,000 delegates have registered for the event. As well as representatives from England, Italy, Germany, France and all the major European clubs, there are representatives from the Japan, Singapore, Brazil, South Africa, Malawi, Argentina, Tunisia, Israel, Australia, Cameroon, the US and UAE.

Among the biggest exhibitors and sponsors is the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid team, while another would-be host nation, Russia, also has a large delegation.

Mr Wright said Manchester was proving to be an “excellent” host city – and is confident the event will expand over the next four years in the city.

“Accessibility is very important and we’re really pleased with the facilities here. Having hotels so close to the venue is key. It’s a great location and it lends itself perfectly to our event. Manchester is home to the world’s richest football club and perhaps the most famous, which underlines the city’s sporting heritage.”

He said Manchester had seen off competition from London and Spain to host Soccerex’s European event.
