North Wales gets two Enterprise Zones

THE Welsh Government have announced the creation of five new enterprise zones – two of which are in North Wales.

A zone focussed on advanced manufacturing is set to be built in Deeside, while a zone aimed at attracting companies from the energy sector is to be set up on the isle of Angelsey.

Announcing the Zones yesterday, business minister Edwina Hart said the zones would not be a replication of the previous creation which saw cash pouring into certain areas on inward investment projects which in many cases did not provide long-term sources of employment.

She said that evaluation of prvious schemes had shown “very mixed results”.
“We will take a bespoke approach to each location and will deploy a selective approach to the policy interventions, using some in some locations and not in others.

“This is because we need to get best value from the very modest consequential funding of approximately £10m from the UK Government.

“We have an opportunity to take a targeted approach in Wales and design a bespoke Welsh solution that doesn’t just automatically replicate the approach taken in England.”
