Readers’ poll: Deficit should be tackled immediately

THE next government should initiate plans to tackle the public sector deficit immediately after the general election, according to TheBusinessDesk readers.
The majority of respondents to our latest survey (57%) thought this the best course of action for the economy.
Meanwhile, 38% said they feared that immediate action could derail the economic recovery.
Peter Jackson, managing director of Active Business Solutions in Northwich, emailed TheBusinessDesk with his views.
He said: “Any decisions will have a substantial lag anyway so immediate decisions will not have much impact now until 2012 anyway.
“The alternative – a return to 1960s style taxation – in a global economy could prove to be catastrophic for living standards in the UK by reducing disposable incomes and shifting growth away from the UK.”
