Newton rejoins Latics board

MIKE Newton, the New York-based trader who walked away from Oldham Athletic’s board in 2009 in frustration at the lack of progress at the club, has returned.

Mr Newton’s re-appointment as director follows on from the club’s £5.7m deal agreed with Oldham Council in August, which saw it abandon plans to move into a new council-owned stadium on land in Failsworth in favour of a redevelopment of Boundary Park.

Newly-filed accounts for Oldham Athletic for 2010 showed that its net liabilities widened by £800,000 to £5.4m at its year end.

During his absence from Oldham Athleton, Mr Newton reportedly held talks regarding potential takeovers at Port Vale and at Stockport County, but no firm bid emerged in either instance.
