Northern Trust to redevelop former sugar factory site

CHORLEY-based developer Northern Trust has signed a new joint venture to redevelop a 350-acre former factory site in south Shropshire which has sat unused for three years.

The firm has teamed up with food giant Associated British Foods to redevelop 100 acres of the ex-British Sugar facility in Allscott, near Bridgnorth.

The site closed in 2008 after more than 80 years in business. At its peak, it processed more than 6,000 tonnes of sugar beet and generated 800 HGV deliveries each day.

A public consultation event will be held early next year to gauge the views of local businesses and residents in a bid to identify and assess the regeneration options available for the site.

Mike Riding, land and regeneration director at Northern Trust, said: “We are committed to the regeneration of the site and the provision of a high quality development at Allscott which is appropriate to the surrounding area.

“There is an opportunity to transform this extensive brownfield site to create a new sustainable community which can develop as an integrated place within the rural economy.

“We are familiar with the area having completed the Cedar Court development in 2008.”

Northern Trust is owned by entrepreneur Trevor Hemmings. Last month, the company filed accounts showing a £7.1m loss for the year to March 31 due to write-downs in the value of corporate investments.  A directors’ report accompanying its accounts stated that it would focus future activities on property.
