Tesco starts on site in Hattersley

CONSTRUCTION has started on a new Tesco-led redevelopment of Hattersley town centre.
The project, being carried out by developer CTP alongside Peak Valley Housing Association, the Homes & Communities Agency and Tameside Borough Council, will see a new 90,000 sq ft being built at the centre of a new community hub including a police post, library, community centre and a new housing office.
Once complete next summer, the development is expected to create around 450 jobs. The store is being built by Morgan Sindall.
Keith McCormack of developers CTP said, “We have been working with Tesco and land owners Peak Valley Housing Association and the Council to produce this exciting scheme for some time.
“It’s good to see the plans become a reality at last and bring much needed local facilities to the people of Hattersley.”
Peak Valley Housing Association was set up five years ago following the transfer of housing stock from Manchester City Council, and managing director Phil Corris said the start of the Tesco scheme was a milestone in the redevelopment of Hattersley.
Earlier this year, it completed a £33.5m refurbishment of the housing stock, and it has added 64 new homes. A further 41 will be added by the end of March.
Cllr Kieran Quinn, Leader of Tameside Council, said: “It is exciting that all the partners involved in working to transform this area and bring jobs here, are finally seeing the plans coming to fruition.”
The store is expected to open in summer 2012.
