Barnfield to build £4.9m Pilkington’s plant

BARNFIELD Construction has landed a £4.9m contract to build the new coated glass production plant based at Pilkington’s Cowley Hill site in St Helens.

The design and build contract, due to be completed in April 2012, will provide a 150,000 sq ft facility for the production of energy-efficient Pilkington K Glass.

The 280 metre-long building will also provide 10,000 sq ft of new offices. The building is part of a £36m investment in a new coating line at Pilkington by parent company NSG Group.

Subject to final approval, it will be supported by a £5 million award from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund.

NSG Group, the Japanese company which acquired Pilkington in 2006, has operations in 30 countries worldwide and employs around 3,000 people in the UK.

Tim Webber, managing director of Nelson-based Barnfield Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been selected at competitive tender to act as main contractor on the scheme.

“The NSG Group is an extremely prestigious company and we are pleased to be able to include them in our extensive list of clients and also to be associated with them on other schemes going forward.”
