Music Magpie tunes up for growth with 100 jobs

ENTERTAINMENT Magpie, the company behind the innovative Music Magpie business, is to create around 100 jobs in the next few months at a new warehouse in Stockport.
The Macclesfield-based company, which buys unwanted CDs, DVDs and video games from consumers via its musicmagpie.co.uk site has taken a 100,000sq ft site in Hazel Grove.
Chief executive and co-founder Steve Oliver told TheBusinessDesk.com the new facility would be up and running by the end of March.
“It represents an exciting next phase for the business as we look forward to the next year of further developed technologies and expanded international on-line opportunities”
The company, which is backed by private equity firm LDC, already employs 650 people at its base in Macclesfield.
It has ambitious growth plans to more than treble turnover to £100m by the end of 2013. Sales are expected to more than double to around £65m in the year to this May, up from £31m in 2011.
The firm is buying 100,000 items a day from across the UK and Germany, and sells to more than 140 countries. Overseas revenues account for about 40% of turnover.
Steve Oliver and Walter Gleeson – who founded Entertainment Magpie with him in 2007 – won a clutch of awards last year for their success in growing the business. Chief among these was a national Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
