Ener-G buys Blackpool waste-to-energy firm

ENERGOS Holdings has acquired Blackpool waste-to-energy business BioGen Power.

Energos manufactures gassification plants and other technology used to convert energy from burned waste and is part of Salford-based green technology company ENER-G group.

It already had a 28% stake in Biogen, which has planning approval for six waste-to-energy sites with a combined capacity to handle 650,000 tonnes of waste and generate 60MW of power. The deal was completed by way of a share swap, with Biogen’s owners receiving additional shares in Energos.

Following the deal, BioGen’s Blackpool office has been closed and staff have relocated to the Energos base in Warrington.

Energos has already built seven energy from waste sites across Northern Europe over the last 15 years and managing director Nick Dawber said the acquisition of BioGen “provides an exciting opportunity to deliver a UK network of small-scale advanced thermal conversion plants”.

He added: “This acquisition brings further specialist planning and waste contracting expertise into the organisation and adds to the strength of Energos. We look forward to starting to roll out the UK development portfolio in 2012.”

Energos expects to start construction on two of its six approved sites in 2012, with the remaining sites in the following two years. The sites for which Biogen had gained consent are: Knowsley, Merseyside; Irvine, Scotland; Newport, South Wales;  Barry, South Wales; Doncaster, Yorkshire; and Bradford, Yorkshire.

In the year to March 31, 2011, BioGen Power declared a pre-tax loss of £666,020.
