Skyscraper proposed for Liverpool waterfront

A NEW 67-storey skyscraper is being proposed for a site overlooking Liverpool’s waterfront.

The new design for the site of the former King Edward St pub at the northern end of the Strand is the latest of several proposals for a skyscraper on the site and has been designed by  Manchester-based architect Maurice Shapero. If built, it would be the tallest building in the north of England.

His design for a mixed-use scheme has been inspired by shipping containers and contains plans for 350 apartments, 21,000 sq ft of retail, 84,000 sq ft of offices and a 13,000 sq ft restaurant on land at the junction of King Edward St and Leeds St.

The application, which is expected to be submitted in March, has been brought forward by Custard Pie Properties, which owns part of the site.

The application process is being funded by developer Richmont Properties, which is based in Hoylake and owned by Wirral businessmen William Beaumont and Christopher Richards.

Previous designs created by Manchester-based Leach Rhodes Walker for a 165m tower for Richmont and Y1 Developments failed to gain approval after architectural watchdog CABE and Peel Holdings objected to the plans. This time, however, CABE is understood to be supportive of the design.
