Two new housing schemes for Blackburn

PLANS for a revised housing scheme at the former Blackburn Infirmary are due to be unveiled this weekend.

A public exhibition on the proposed new development by David Wilson Homes will be unveiled at Ivy Street Community Centre on Saturday, February 4 between 10am and 12pm.

The plans will be unveiled at the exhibition for comment by members of the public before a planning application is submitted.

Planning consent was originally granted to Barratt Homes and PJ Livesey in 2008 to redevelop the site for housing and retain the War Memorial building for conversion into apartments. However, the scheme was put on hold as a result of the recession.

The new proposals do not include the War Memorial building, which is being looked at separately.

Councillor Tony Humphrys, executive member for housing, said: “The council and the developers have worked hard to ensure that this development gets off the ground again.

“It is a strategic site along one of the gateways into the town centre and it is a great sign of confidence, particularly in the current economic climate.”

Meanwhile, specialist affordable housing developer Mulbury Homes is to build 28 new family homes on a former industrial site at Tewkesbury St in Blackburn on behalf of Twin Valley Homes.

The £2.8m development will see a mix of two- and three-bedroom homes built on a 1.8 acre site at Tewkesbury Street, in the Mill Hill area of the town, with work already under way to clear the site.

The development has been funded by Homes and Communities Agency and is expected to be complete by January 2013.

Greg Mulligan, director of Lymm-based Mulbury Homes, said: “We are working with Twin Valley Homes and Blackburn with Darwen Council to ensure the new homes provide a high-quality solution to meet local housing needs.”
