Plans for Macclesfield waste facility halted

CHESHIRE East Council has withdrawn a planning application to build a waste transfer station at Lyme Green in Macclesfield.

The council said that it still considers the site to be the most suitable for the “much-needed” facility, but said it would hold talks with with residents in the north of the borough before deciding on a way forward.

Cllr Rod Menlove, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: “The council is committed to providing high-quality doorstep collection services for recycling and waste materials and therefore the need for a recycling transfer facility to service Macclesfield and the north of the borough is clear.    

“We have already made great progress in refining our collection service and reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill. This has already saved the council a considerable amount of money:  the new waste transfer station is key to building on this success and reducing landfill even further.”  

John Nicholson, Cheshire East Council’s strategic director of places and organisational capacity, said: “Given the concerns raised over the authority’s current proposals for a recycling transfer station at Lyme Green depot, the council is happy to review the best way to create the facility.”
