Macclesfield composter beds down at River Cottage

COMPOSTING company Tidy Planet has had its Rocket Composter installed by organic food pioneer Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at his River Cottage restaurant.

Fearnley-Whittingstall is in the process of making the River Cottage site at Axminster as self-sustaining as possible – adding a wind turbine and biomass boiler fuelled by local forest clearings as alternative energy sources.

Macclesfield-based Tidy Planet said that its Rocket Composter will add to the site’s environmental credentials by converting all of the restaurant’s food waste into compost. The system has been undergoing a trial over the past few months but is now fully operational.

“Our ethos at River Cottage is to promote a sustainable way of living that celebrates the best of local produce,” said Fearnley-Whittingstall. “Composting is a fantastic way to support this and the Rocket will allow us to dispose of food waste sustainably, removing the need for this to be sent to landfill.

“We’ll also be using the compost on some of our gardens to help nurture our crops to ensure we continue to produce the best quality food for our kitchen.”

The River Cottage are using an A700 Rocket Composter, which is capable of composting up to 1400 litres of food and organic waste per week through aerobic decomposition.
