Burnley business scores another Oscars success

BURNLEY-based audio technology business AMS Neve has said its technology was used in virtually all of the films nominated for an Oscar at last weekend’s ceremonies.

The company, which was founded in 1978 by managing director Mark Crabtree, provided the sound desks used to record or mix the soundtrack for films such as: Hugo; The Iron Lady; Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy; War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, among others.

Mr Crabtree’s firm has a turnover of around £5m and employs approximately 80 specialist staff including analogue and digital designers, software specialists and audio purists.

Mr Crabtree said: “The AMS Neve DFC Digital FilAMS Neve founder Mark Crabtree with a Digital Film Consolem Console is a past recipient of its own Technical Oscar for its design and contribution to the art and science of motion picture sound mixing.”

“We provided both digital and analogue consoles to create this year’s Oscar winners and nominees.”

He added that all of its products are made in Burnley, and that 80% are exported to more than 40 markets overseas.

“Burnley’s engineering, and high tech sector is punching above its weight,” he said. “Collectively, we are demonstrating a way forward and addressing the challenges of rebalancing the economy.”
