£50m tissue factory expansion approved

A TISSUE manufacturing company has been given the green light for a £50m expansion which will create 50 jobs in Cheshire.

Cheshire East Council has approved plans submitted by Disley Tissue to build a 220-tonne a day wood pulp mill. The company, based on Waterside Road, Disley, already has a recycled paper mill at the site.

Built in the early 19th century, the former cotton mill was converted to a paper mill in 1890 and now makes high-quality paper with a low carbon footprint from sustainable raw materials.

A number of unused buildings will be demolished as part of the development and there will be an extension of the stock preparation area, new fibre and waste storage areas, a new paper mill building and two storeys of offices.

Cllr Harold Davenport, chairman of Cheshire East’s strategic planning board, said: “This development is a significant business opportunity for both Disley Tissue and Cheshire East.

“The strategic planning board felt that this investment into pulp paper-making will diversify the current waste paper operation and help secure the future of the existing business.

“These factors, coupled with the creation of 50 new skilled jobs, will bring substantial benefits to the area.”

Cllr Jamie Macrae, cabinet member with responsibility for prosperity, added: “
“The council is proud to be doing all it can to help grow and develop a robust and sustainable Cheshire East economy and secure jobs for local people.”
witnessing the benefits from this expansion.”

The plans now have to be ratified by the National Planning Casework Unit. If this body agrees with the council’s decision, the development will go ahead.
