Caldeira to run for Liverpool mayor

ENTREPRENEUR Tony Caldeira is set to run against Liverpool City Council leader Cllr Joe Anderson in Liverpool’s mayoral elections.

Mr Caldeira has been chosen by the City of Liverpool Conservatives to run for mayor when the city hosts its mayoral election on May 3.

He is the founder of Liverpool-based cushion company Caldeira, which he has built from a stall on Great Homer Street market into a business with sales of £21m, a major factory in China and a large sales operation in the US.

His campaign will get underway today with a website launch and a social media campaign, which will focus on his bid to make the city a Capital of Enterprise Culture.

The campaign will run under the Tony4Liverpool name.

Mr Caldeira’s firm announced yesterday that it had opened a new sewing floor at its factory in Knowsley.

The firm spent £50,000 on the floor, including buying new machinery and putting in new electrical installations, and said that the move secures the positions of 20 recently-hired staff.

Caldeira UK’s general manager Malcolm Smith, who both designed the new production lines and managed the project, said: “The expansion of our manufacturing capacity is great news for our UK staff and our customers.

“Our full order book on both sides of the Atlantic and the strong demand for our UK-made goods in particular, has given the company the confidence to make this important investment here in Merseyside.”
