Addleshaws launch memorial bursary

LAW firm Addleshaw Goddard has launched an award in honour of the memory of Sonia McMahon.

A £2,000 bursary will be made to students from socially and economically challenged backgrounds to help them meet the cost  of  studying law at university.

The Sonia McMahon Memorial Award will be presented each year to a single student from one of the local schools in Manchester (Oldham College), Leeds and London.

To be eligible, candidates will need to meet certain social mobility criteria and will need to have secured a conditional place at university to study law.

Addleshaws’ senior partner Monica Burch, said: “Sonia’s legacy lives on in the numerous trainees and lawyers she has supervised and mentored and we think it fitting to celebrate Sonia’s legacy in a way which will continue to help talented and committed individuals realise their ambitions.

“The financial and practical support we will offer through The Sonia McMahon Memorial Award is a fitting tribute to a much loved and respected colleague.”

Sonia McMahon joined Addleshaw Goddard in 1998 as a trainee, qualifying into its Business Support & Restructuring practice in 2000.
In May 2008, she became a legal director before becoming a partner in May 2010. She died aged 37 last September.
