Downing gains approval for £25m Leeds student tower
LIVERPOOL-based developer Downing has submitted plans for a 21-storey student accommodation tower which will be built as part of the second phase of its £40m Central Village scheme.
The £25m tower will contain 404 cluster bedrooms and will sit alongside the 577-bed first phase of Central Village due to complete in September – for which
Downing recently agreed a six-year lease with the University of Leeds. It has also signed a deal with Tesco which will open a 4,500 sq ft Tesco Express on the site during autumn.

“We’ve been active in Leeds for a number of years and we know that there is a robust student market here that demands quality, city centre accommodation.
“The ambitious nature of our Phase 2 plans, plus the pre-let for Phase 1 is testament to that.”
Downing’s own construction arm, George Downing Construction, is building the entire Central Village scheme, which was designed by architects John McAslan + Partners.
Downing is the company behind the award-winning Broadcasting Place student scheme in Leeds, which was named Best Tall Building in the World by a global panel of architects and engineers in 2010.
