Consortium appointed to redevelop Pendleton

SALFORD City Council has chosen the SP+ consortium to deliver a housing-led regeneration of 500 acres of land in Pendleton.

The scheme will involve the creation of 1,600 new homes, as well as the refurbishment of an existing 1,200 properties.

The lead partner in the consortium is social housing landlord Chevin Housing Association on behalf of Together Housing. It was selected after a four-year competitive tender proces which involved consultation with local people.

The redevelopment will also contain new sports pitches, cycle paths and other amenities for residents.

A planning application covering the work will be submitted over the summer, and work is set to start later this year. It is estimated that around 500 new jobs will be created as a result of the scheme as well as 2,000 work experience placements. Contracts for local suppliers are also set to be generated.

Cllr Gena Merrett, lead member for housing for Salford City Council, said: “This is an incredibly exciting and much anticipated regeneration scheme for the area.

“The plans put forward by the preferred bidder not only build new housing, they will also make the most of what is already there.

“It has taken many years to get to the stage where we are ready to start the scheme, but it is so important we get a scheme like this right as it has major implications for the community.”

Paul Hayes, director of new business at SP+, said:  “This is a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform Pendleton and improve the quality of life for everyone.”
