Roomzzz finds space in Manchester basement

SERVICED apartments operator Roomzzz has submitted plans to alter its Manchester-based property to add an extra 11 apartments.

The company, which is owned by Leeds-based Park Lane Properties, is spending £500,000 on the refurb, which will see the reception area at semi-basement level converted.

This will allow access to sub-basement levels where 11 new one- and two-bed apartments are proposed in the former shipping warehouse. Following the conversion, the number of apartments at the building – on a prominent site on the junction of Princess St and Portland St – to 59.

Roomzzz opened its Manchester site in December 2009 after buying the former Yang Sing Oriental Hotel when the £8m venture closed just eight months after it opened.

Roomzzz has since managed a successful turnaround in its fortunes, and head of the firm’s Aparthotel operations, Mark Walton, said: “Manchester City is a key location for us and the prospect of the additional 11 apartments is going to help with meeting demand which is extremely high.

“The expansion in Manchester will create 12 new jobs in the long term and we are planning on being on site for three months – using local build and construction firms.”

Roomzzz also recently announced plans to open a site in the North East through the conversion of Friar House in Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre. The £5m project will see the building converted into 44 aparthotels. It will be the fifth Roomzzz site, with the other three all located in Leeds.
