Sky waste plant rejected by inspector

SKY Properties’ plan to build a £70m waste facility in Salford has been knocked back by a planning inspector.

The proposal was rejected by the council in June but Sky went on to appeal the decision.

The inspector said the development would have a detrimental impact on the area and was in conflict with the local development plan.

The proposals had received backing from business organisations such as the CBI, IoD and Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, but councillors faced a concerted campaign against the scheme from local residents and MP Hazel Blears.

Campaigners argued that the energy-from-waste gassification plant used untested technology, and that Sky’s site would increase traffic and risk of accidents in a busy area close to a community park and a school.

Sky said the scheme, at the former Mitchell Shackleton site on Green Lane in Monton, would have created 60 jobs. It is now loking at alternative uses for the site.
