Property briefs: Salford Central; Turley wins appeal, Kirkland puts Marple plans on show

THE English Cities Fund has submitted a planning application for the first part of the £650m Salford Central regeneration.

Its proposals – for an area off Chapel Street adjacent to the Bell Tower pub – involve a block of six to three-storey apartments and retail units fronting onto Chapel Street. The pub will be kept and refurbished.

The area sits between Chapel Street, Islington Way, Barrow Street and Wroe Street.

Phil Mayall, development director at the English Cities Fund, said: “The submission of this planning application marks a significant point in bringing new development to Chapel Street. It shows that the scheme is gathering pace and residents will soon start to see physical improvements in the area.”

The English Cities Fund – a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General and The Homes & Communities Agency – says the regeneration of the wider 44-acre site could create 11,000 jobs.

PLANNING consultancy Turley Associates has won outline planning permission for 135 homes in Chorley on appeal.

Manchester-based Turley was acting for Ewloe-based housebuilder Redrow which wants to build the houses at Lucas Lane, Whittle-le-Woods.

Turley director Sam Ryan said: “Whittle-le-Woods is one of a number of settlements in Chorley that has been ear-marked for new homes to meet the housing requirements of the borough.

“This is an important appeal decision that will also see much needed affordable housing provided in the local area.”

Robin Buckley, senior planning manager for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), said: “We are delighted with this decision. The development will enable us to deliver high-quality family homes in Whittle-le-Woods as an extension to the adjacent popular scheme that Redrow developed in the 1990s.

“We are currently preparing detailed proposals that relate sensitively to the existing trees and natural features of the site and hope to commence building within 12 months.”

STOCKPORT developer Kirkland Developments is putting its plans for a supermarket in the middle of Marple on show.

It wants to build a foodstore off Trinity Street where the Royal Mail depot currently stands.

The launch of Kirkland’s proposals comes as ASDA holds its public exhibition for an out-of-town store on Hibbert Lane.

Kirkland’s managing director Rod Hogarth said: “As a local company and the council’s preferred development partner, we’re pleased to be in a position to bring forward proposals for a foodstore right in the heart of Marple town centre.

“This store is in a great location. It will help to increase footfall to the town centre and enable local residents to do their weekly shop at a store in Marple, meaning that they don’t have to travel elsewhere – saving time and money, and helping the local economy.

“We are in discussions with a number of high quality food retailers who have expressed an interest in locating here, particularly if the council were to refuse permission for ASDA’s current plans for an out-of-centre foodstore on Hibbert Lane.”
