Capital & Centric plans Wrexham supermarket

MANCHESTER developer Capital & Centric has submitted plans for a 45,000 sq ft supermarket near Wrexham.

It wants to use an empty industrial site at Vauxhall Industrial Estate on Ruabon Road at Johnstown for the scheme. The firm says it could cater for 20,000 people.

Capital & Centric director Adam Higgins told TheBusinessDesk.com: “We’re trying to identify towns that are underserved, where people are having to drive to other towns.

“Supermarkets are quite a mature market so it’s not like you can pop up in any town. There are very few that desperately need one.”

The firm is also in talks with three of the four major supermarket groups for its site in Barnoldswick, Lancashire.

Capital & Centric won permssion from Pendle Council in August for the scheme which will create a 36,000 sq ft foodstore and a 37,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Skipton Road for roller blind specialist Albert Hartley Home Textiles.

It was picked ahead of rival applications for Aldi and Tesco supermarkets close by and promises to protect 100 jobs in the town. The big four supermarket groups are Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s.

“We’re in talks with three of them to move that forward,” said Mr Higgins.
