Wilmslow firm charged over worker’s death

A GROUNDWORKS company and one of its directors are to be prosecuted after an employee fell to his death in an empty water storage tank in Macclesfield.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is brining criminal proceedings against Wilmslow-based Galt Civil Engineering and Peter Stuart following an investigation into the death of Peter Halligan at Sutton Hall Farm on August 14, 2008.

The 45-year-old from Liverpool had been working above a 14-metre deep tank, used to collect flood water at the farm on London Road in Lyme Green, Macclesfield.

Galt Civil Engineering and Peter Stuart, 54, of Delph Lane in Chorley, have been charged in relation to Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

They are due to appear before South Sefton Magistates’ Court in Bootle on Thursday October 18 for the first hearing in the case.
