Eden Biodesign named top biomed company

LIVERPOOL drug discovery firm Eden Biodesign was named Company of the Year at the Bionow Annual Awards which recognise the achievements of the region’s biomedical sector.

The firm, which was set up in the city in 2000, was acquired by the listed US group Watson Pharmaceuticals for around £10m two years ago.

Manchester Science Park tenant Phagenesis, which has developed a treatment device for dysphagia – a condition which prevents stroke sufferers from being able to swallow safely – won Healthcare Project of the Year.

Scientific research company Euprotec, also based at the park, picked up Service Company of the Year, and Manchester University won Biomedical Project of the Year for a microsensor project.

Geoff Davison chief executive of biomedical trade body Bionow, said: “The strength and depth of the cluster and diversity of applications applications made this years judging as difficult as ever and the winners represent the cream of one of the leading clusters of biomedical businesses in the UK.”

The judging panel consisted of representatives from sponsors, including Baker Tilly, Novartis Vaccines, TrusTECH, UL Eduneering, Waters Corporation, DWF and AstraZeneca. The event, held at Mere Golf Resort & Spa, attracted around 280 people.
