Salford secures ultra-fast broadband deal

SALFORD will be among the second round of cities to receive cash from the Government to roll out ultra-fast broadband.

Chancellor George Osborne said the city will benefit from a £50m fund and is expected to receive £7.1m.

Other locations in this round are: Brighton and Hove, Coventry, Aberdeen, Cambridge, Derby, Oxford, Portsmouth, York, Perth, Newport and Derry.

It follows £12m for an ultra-fast network in Manchester which was announced in September as part of a 10 city deal.

Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart said: “Salford is the home of MediaCityUK, the most advanced technology centre in western Europe, and with this funding the rest of the city will enjoy ultra-fast broadband to encourage business growth.

“The council put in a big effort and bold plans to ensure that the funding came to Salford. With the money in place, we are able to give small and medium sized businesses a genuine boost.”
