Office-to-student flats plan approved

PLANS for a further 616 student rooms at two sites were approved by Liverpool City Council yesterday.

One of the schemes, for 176 rooms, involves the conversion of a four-year-old grade A office block, City Point, at Great Homer Street.

Developer Oscar Developments told the council it has tenants, but numbers are too low to make the building viable.

The move came as planning minister Nick Boles unveiled proposals that will allow landlords to convert empty offices into flats without planning permission.

In the city centre Liverpool’s Pointfield Developments and Taylorson Developments, based in Manchester, have secured permission to build a six to 10-storey block with 440 student beds on the site of the former Odeon cinema in London Road.

Day Architectural Design at Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire, is handling the application.
