Property briefs: Sir Bobby takes space at Booths Park, and more

A CHARITY set up by Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton has taken space at Bruntwood’s Booths Park, near Knutsford.

Find a Better Way funds research into the safe detection and removal of landmines around the world.

It has taken four desks at Booths Park’s Springwood Building.

The charity was set up in 2011 following Sir Bobby’s UN-backed visits to Bosnia, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Richard Livings, from Find A Better Way, said: “The last few years has seen a lot of hard work take us from nothing to a well-funded registered charity and with a range of research projects.

“Find A Better Way goes from strength to strength and having our own office is an exciting move and the latest step in our extraordinary growth. Having worked from shared offices for the last few years, we felt the time was right to bring everyone together and wanted a new office space that would accommodate the future growth of the team.”

RIBA North West has teamed up with Preston City Council, Lancashire County Council and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), to launch its Forgotten Spaces competition.

The competition, which has already taken place in London, Newcastle and Sheffield, will seek out redundant spaces across Preston and invite innovative design proposals for re-use and regeneration. It is sponsored by the Eric Wright Group.

A forgotten space could be anything from an empty unit or scrubland to a derelict building or underpass.

It is open to members of RIBA, the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Landscape Institute, as well as students, artists, members of the public and community groups.

Council leader Peter Rankin said: “We are delighted that RIBA has chosen Preston alongside London to provide the ‘Forgotten Spaces’ as part of this nationally recognised competition.

“Preston has some fantastic development opportunities and this a great chance for architects to explore Preston’s forgotten spaces and view it from a different perspective, providing inspiration to developers, fellow architects and the people of Preston alike.

“We look forward to the seeing the entries and the final selection which will be displayed as an exhibition later in the year.”

Winners will be announced in November. The top prize is £5,000.
