Russells on site at Northwich Waitrose

RUSSELLS Construction has started work on a new Waitrose in the centre of Northwich, Cheshire.
The 27,500 sq ft supermarket is part of a wider £20m mixed-use scheme to revamp a riverside site at Hayhurst Quay, once home to the town’s Regal Cinema and floating hotel known as the Floatel.
The Trafford-based contractor was appointed to the £4.5m contract by developer H2O Urban, the joint venture between The Canal and River Trust and London developer Bloc.
Russells has also been responsible for site remediation and will provide a 208-space car park, landscaping and refurbish the marina slipway.
It plans to complete the shell by November when Waitrose will fit-out the 18,000 sq ft sales area ahead of a December opening. The architect is Manchester-based Lewis and Hickey.
Managing director Andrew Russell said: “The regeneration of this site required significant preparatory work which has now been complete allowing construction of the new Waitrose to begin. Over recent years we’ve gained a reputation for delivering complex waterside schemes and we’re pleased to have been contracted once again by H2O Urban and Waitrose.”
Richard Thomas, Bloc’s development director, said: “We hope the new leisure facilities, high quality public space around the waterside will act as a catalyst for future regeneration. We’re opening up access to the waterfront, which is currently not accessible, and providing barges and river craft with modern marina with all the associated facilities they’d expect. It’s an exciting plan and we’ve very pleased to welcome Russells Construction to the team and see construction of the Waitrose begin.”
Last week plans were agreed for Barons Quay, a large mixed-use development on the other side of the town.
