Liverpool will lose £290m of EU cash – Mayor Joe

MAYOR of Liverpool Joe Anderson fears European funding to the city will be cut by up to £290m.

It follows a meeting last week between representatives from Liverpool and Sheffield and Whitehall officials where they were told to expect funding for 2014-20 to be the same as the last three years of the current European programme.

The city estimates this represents a 65% cut compared to the 2000-13 programme which delivered around £440m.

The council said it followed the Government’s decision to reallocate £650m of EU funding for England to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Mayor Anderson said: “What is being proposed flies in the face of the whole purpose of the funding. It is explicitly designed to help areas such as ours which are lagging behind, to improve their economic performance. Instead we have a situation where the funding is effectively being robbed, and given to areas which aren’t as badly off.”
