Liverpool fans threaten RBS boycott

THE Royal Bank of Scotland is facing a potential boycott by Liverpool fans unhappy with the club’s owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The Spirit of Shankly fans group wants RBS to sever ties with the duo less than a year after it provided a £350m refinancing package with US investment bank Wachovia.

The deal, which has left the club with annual interest payments of £30m, expires in January.

The Spirit of Shankly say they want to put pressure on Gillett and Hicks to, “force them into a sale and out of our club”.

A statement on the group’s website said: “There will be a number of ideas proposed, one including targeting those who have financed Tom Hicks’ and George Gillett’s ownership of the club – Royal Bank of Scotland.”

They want RBS to reconsider its position when the loan expires. If it continues to back the Americans it is understood the group could urge all Liverpool supporters to close any accounts they hold with the bank.
