Scrap metal group Martin sees sales surge

SCRAP metal specialist Tom Martin & Company, which works with businesses across a wide range of sectors to dispose of waste non-ferrous metals, has reported a surge in sales and profits.
The independent business, based near Preston, which was founded in 1948 and was a pioneer in the sector in this country, now employs around 70 people and has operations here and in Poland.
Newly-filed accounts for 2012, show the group enjoying dramatic growth in sales in the UK and overseas. Group turnover for parent company Tom Martin Metal Holdings 2011 rocketed from £29.7m to £48.9m and pre-tax
profits rose from £1.3m to £2.2m
The company, which handles in excess of 50,000 tonnes of non-ferrous metals every year, was last year ranked 97th by the Sunday Times International Track 200 for its success in growing international sales.
Between 2011 and 2012 non-UK sales rose from £15.3m to £26.1m. Domestic revenues also saw strong growth too, surging from £14.3m to £22.8m.
The business, which has a facility at Trafford Park, was founded by German immigrant Arthur Hubert, who chose the company name for its quintessential Englishness.
It now exports scrap metal to customers as far afield as Singapore and Japan and has more than 90 overseas customers.
