National Museums Liverpool wins another £1.2m from AEW

NATIONAL Museums Liverpool has been awarded a further £1.24m in damages in a High Court ruling against Manchester architects AEW.

The judgement by Mr Justice Akenhead at the High Court in London is on top of the £1.2m awarded to the organisation last month relating to design faults on external steps and terraces.

The award of £1.24m relates to design faults on some of ceilings inside the museum.

The most serious incident saw the ceiling in the Wonderous Place Gallery collapse in May 2011 injuring  a contractor.

Sharon Granville, executive director, Museum of Liverpool said: “Last month the court found in favour of National Museums Liverpool on all counts.

“We are very pleased with this latest settlement. In total we’ve had more than £2.3m awarded to us in damages with further sums in indemnities on top of that. Interest and costs will be awarded in October.

“This is great news for our visitors as it means we can rectify long-standing issues with the building and make areas accessible to the public in the near future. We thank Mr Justice Akenhead for his judgement.”

In a statement Steve Burne, managing director of Spring Gardens-based AEW Architects said: “This is the final stage relating to the amount awarded as part of the judgement which was first issued on July 31st. We are glad this is now concluded.”

Mr Burne said earlier this month that the litigation would not impact the ongoing health of the business.
